What's your Weather like today

Yesterday I was talking to one of my neighbors, and we were talking about Eureka. She asked me what I miss about Eureka the most. I pulled my phone out, opened my weather app and showed her it was 104°F outside, then I switched it to Eureka, and at shortly after 3:00p it was 57°F. I turned the phone back towards her and said "This!"

I have always said "If you are cold, you can put on a sweater or a coat, wrap yourself in a blanket, etc., but if you are hot you can only strip so far." 🥵

Well we have already risen from 64 to 68F by 05:30 and within 30 minutes a line of thunderstorms will come through. At least it appears to be a line moving perpendicularly to its path, so it won't "train" a series of storms and showers over us dumping down tons of water.

It isn't clear yet how soon these will clear out, how clear, and for how long. But it does look like more will be coming later on, perhaps smaller showers.

Checking radar out of 3 cities now gives a clearer picture though. We may be ducking the heaviest of these rains after all.

Today is Day 46 of Kern County's 100 most Deadly Days. (Memorial Day to Labor Day.) We hit 104°F today, and is supposed to be over 100°F every day for the next week, perhaps even longer. It's 2:00a and it is 84°F outside. Usually by now it's in the mid 70°F range

Already 73F at 07:00, Humid, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, chances growing after Noon. High 96F.

I don't see rain coming at me on radar yet, so perhaps the morning will be partly sunny. I have 4 sets of solar panels out but we'll see if I get any batteries topped off.

Air quality alerts across the state now. USG = Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.

1001 AM EDT Sat Jul 12 2025
...Air Quality Alert Sunday, July 13 through 12PM Monday, July 14...
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy
(EGLE) has issued an Air Quality Alert for elevated levels of fine
particulate (PM2.5) in the western portion of the Upper Peninsula on
Saturday and statewide Sunday until noon Monday. Pollutants across
the state are expected to reach the Very Unhealthy (Purple) to
Unhealthy (Red AQI) range in northern locations, with ranges of
Unhealthy to USG (Orange AQI) further south.
The Air Quality Alert Sunday into Monday is statewide.
Wildfire smoke from Canada will push into Michigan from Saturday to
Monday. Increased fine particulate levels will reach the western
portion of the Upper Peninsula on Saturday afternoon. The smoke will
push east and south, expanding across the rest of the state as Sunday
progresses. Highest concentrations will be seen in northern areas
with periods of Very Unhealthy to Unhealthy possible. Central
locations could see readings ranging from Unhealthy to USG, and
southern locations can expect levels of fine particulate in the
Moderate to USG range.
It is recommended that, when possible, you avoid strenuous outdoor
activities, especially those with heart disease and respiratory
diseases like asthma. Monitor for symptoms such as wheezing,
coughing, chest tightness, dizziness, or burning in nose, throat, and
eyes. Reduce or eliminate activities that contribute to air
pollution, such as:
- outdoor burning
- use of residential wood burning devices
Tips for households:
- Keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors
and, if possible, run central air conditioning with MERV-13 or
higher rated filters.

It has been in the 90’s here most of this week; but we have possible rain coming in by tomorrow. which does not mean we will actually get any, just that the possibility exists. So, today was another beautiful swimming pool day for us.
Some rain tomorrow would be a good thing , for sure; but at least we are not having the awful flooding that so many other places are having right now.

Weather has been generally good here for the past week or two, with highs in the upper 70s F. and lows in the 50s F. Rain off and on.

Deadly Days #47. Still 103°F at 9:00p. If you have too much rain, send some our way... 🥵

But it could be worse. In 1917, it was 100°F or hotter for 76 Days. Hard Pass on that!

Same old, same old. Warm and humid. There's only been one really hot day (97F) all summer, so far. <jinx!> It was that day it didn't rain.

Deadly Days #48. A bone dry 104°F at 9:00a. It usually doesn't get that hot until mid-afternoon, but oddly enough, it's 103°F at 3:00p. I think I need Melting Insurance.

Well, this is "the rest of the story", as Paul Harvey would say. I didn't set foot outside that day because my browser's temperature display on the address bar said it was 104°F at 9:00a. Then later, and this is how I figured this out, it said it was 103°F at 3:00p. And then for two days it was still 103°F no matter what time it was. At 4:00a the next morning I wanted to check the humidity and that address bar app was showing 103°F, but when I clicked on it to open the information screen, it changed to 78°F. Then I realized the temperature display on the address bar wasn't changing on it's own like I thought it did. Maybe I clicked on something I shouldn't have, I don't know... But it seems like it was changing on it's own before this. Maybe there's a new "Feature" in the program?

So now you know the rest of the story. This is not Paul Harvey, good day. ;)

Started out about 52F but by 8:00 AM risen to nearly 60. Sunny, expected to produce a high around 78F. Calm to 5 MPH winds all day. I assume the Lake Michigan swim hazard warnings have been dropped.

It got down to 49 F. this morning, so the night was cool. One of the programs I follow said the upper Midwest was running 15 F. to 20 F. below normal so far this summer. Many areas of the country are warm, but not the center of the country. I don't know about the world as a whole. I guess some of the cooling could be due to the smoke from Canadian wildfires.

Do you feel the earthquake in Alaska the other day ? It was reported as a 7.3, or something close to that, and looked like it was near the edge of islands ; so I was not sure if it would be close enough for you to feel or not ?
I am glad to see you posting, after that terrible earthquake where we lost you completely for so long !

Nope, we didn't feel the Sand Point earthquake. It was too far away. The 2018 earthquake really damaged this part of the state, but we have recovered now...except that some of the road repairs are failing as they were done so quickly to get commerce moving again.
