One flower / shrub once a day

One of my bushes is blooming less and less and getting smaller. I thought it might be too old but I am not sure that is the case. My younger peony has held partly open buds but they are not opening. Weather? too cold?
My father always said the ants that were attracted by the droplets of sap on the buds helped with their opening. This year, no ants.

I remember the ants climbing all over my mom’s peonies, too. I think that she said they were eating some kind of aphids that got on the peony, and I remember he showing me some kind of tiny white bug-like thing that she said the ants were eating. Maybe the aphids ate the flower sap and the ants ate the aphids ?
Even if they are old, they should still bloom. The ones in our yard were there for at least 30 years that i can remember, and probably longer, because i believe that they might have been there in 1950 when my folks got the house.

Ok. That changes where I will plant it. Thank you. Hope they are as hardy as they say. We had bad Japanese beetles last year but this year--no bugs.
I would like to see how spinosad works on Japanese Beetles @Mary Stetler . It is a bacterial toxin, totally organic-certified, and only works on insects that eat leaves. It is absorbed into leaf surface and supposedly doesn't affect bees and other pollinators--but I would spray in the evening when pollinators are not active just in case. You should be able to get it at most garden centers. It is marketed by Monterey if you want to try it. I am trying it this year on saw flies and spider mites. It is supposed to take care of those. Some organic gardeners now use it as their only pesticide. It doesn't affect sucking insects like aphids and true bugs though I guess.

I usually use a systemic all-in-one on non edibles but did not last year.

Our surprise lily was in bloom today ! I remember that we had these before, but it has not blossomed in several years and I had thought that the bulbs must have died in one of the cold snaps in the winter.

I have had a couple of happy flower surprises this year and yet lost a few. The excessive rains made so much green and drowned others plants.
