No One Is Prepared for What’s About to Happen in Canada...

Victor Davis Hanson is a very smart man. I’m interested in what’s going to happen with this topic. It wasnt on my radar at all before Trump put it there. What are you expecting, Joe?

@Susannah
I, like America, have only two neighbors to speak of. Unlike the US's, both are good neighbors. Mexico has always seemed black & white, however Canada has been a "rainbow" of various shades of grey & black. I've noticed the absence of movement on King Charles' "Special" invitation to President Trump to visit England. The King's strutting and posing, borders on the comical. Canada strikes me as the "lost" piece of an unknown puzzle, that will never "fit" into our Country's make-up. The French Language issues, alone, seems to insure that they will divide, before they will ever unite in any form. Who knows?

A good whack of settlers in southern Ontario and portions of Quebec were Tories who fled what became the US. It wasn't much surprise to find them crank up the larger and more hostile Indian tribes to battle the disaffected colonies to their south. Or to later provide intelligence, guidance, and an access path for Crown troops in 1812.

The legacy of this has been bubbling for hundreds of years with hostility and exploitation just below the surface. This is not the friendly power the media has been projecting in recent decades. After all, there have been numerous "soft" incursions over time, involving things like enabling and supplying US organized crime kingpins with booze during Prohibition, drugs for a very long time, and cash injections into belligerent organizations within the US. Some of that in alignment with Castro during the back half of the 20th Century. Niagara Falls and the canal system were the center of a number of hot contests just short of violence over the years. They have an enormous chip on their shoulder.

The prairie Provinces are culturally distinct for several reasons that make them more compatible with the US.

Ukraine made a major drone attack on Russia’s planes last night. Apparently they seriously impacted Russias Air Force but I didn’t bring details. I have two thoughts.

Hopefully this will bring Russia to seriously address peace..

This kind of drone attack on the US is probably what the Golden Dome is intended to prevent.

It will be interesting to see how Russia retaliates. I suspect the planned peace conference will not take place. I wonder if Canada will feel more vulnerable now or would perhaps rather not be associated with the U.S. or NATO.

Canada hates us, but it's not all Trump's fault. (NPR RADIO)

"The stereotype is that Canadians are kind, but they by and large do not take kindly to President Trump's idea of making Canada our 51st state. As of April, two-thirds of Canadians considered the U.S. to be "unfriendly" or an "enemy," and 61% say they have started boycotting American companies. However, Canadian dislike and distrust of the U.S. is not new. Canadian views of the U.S. have trended down for decades, from a high of 81% of Canadians holding favorable views of the U.S. under Clinton in the '90's, to hovering in the 50-60% range in the aughts, to only 24% favorable as of March. Meanwhile, 87% of Americans view Canada favorably. There's a huge mismatch there."

"So what's behind these decades of resentment? How does culture play into it? And what does it mean for our politics that our nations have fundamentally different ideas about our relationship to one another? Brittany discusses with Scaachi Koul, senior writer at Slate, and Jon Parmenter, associate professor of history at Cornell."

"This episode was produced by Liam McBain. It was edited by Neena Pathak. We had engineering support from David Greenburg. Our Supervising Producer is Barton Girdwood. Our Executive Producer is Veralyn Williams. Our VP of Programming is Yolanda Sangweni."

They’re socialists and what do socialists want? They want someone to pay their bills. The leftists in the US are closer to their beliefs than Trump is or any of our conservative leaders.

I don’t really care if they like us. I want them to respect us by paying their fair share of our joint efforts. Pay their share of joint defense, actual fair trade and anything else we are involved with.

Respect is much more valuable between countries than friendship, IMO. Trump would be their best friend if they would step up to the plate and carry their weight. Instead they keep sticking their elbows out and crying that he hit them.

I'm surprised they (at least the history professor) didn't even mention the Iraq War. The female reporter was only 11 years old at the time. Canada refused to participate in the invasion, though they did participate in the reconstruction afterwards. That was during the Bush Admin, right after Clinton left office.

I'm not so sure Russia will ignore this last attack. Also not sure if Russia or Unkrane is most dangerous to us.
I don't think we should be involved with either one. Much less sensing weapons to Ukrane.

I wish Trump would work on getting us out of NATO, like he said he would do.
Having allies is one thing, but being connected to a major military block is another.
But then I don't know that much about what the real plan is.

Ironic, while we spend blood and money on wars, our own nation is being invaded by tens of millions, many of which are our enemies.
While we worry about the Russin, China and other 1st. World nations Islam is slowing invading most 1st World nations.
Who could have imagined 10 years ago that Islam would rule over England and London, Richdale, etc would all have Moslem mayor's or most newborn London males would have a Islamic name like Ali, Mohammad ,etc.

The war in Iraq (the one after 911) probably ranks up there among the worst mistakes the US has made in recent history. Canada was right not to participate, imo. I often wonder, without Cheney and Rumsfeld around, but probably still Colin Powell, how would things have changed, if at all, if W had not won the 2000 election. Would we have gone looking for WMD? I doubt it.

What should we have done instead?

I’m not just asking Nancy but anyone who is willing to answer. I don’t have an answer at the moment but would like to hear others.

Also, did anyone seriously expect Canada to be involved? I don’t recall that.

I think they wanted to go into Iraq for other reasons and 9/11 was an excuse.
The Neocons under Bush saw the opportunity to box in Iran, with Afghanistan on one side and Iraq on the other. They thought they could install "friendly" governments in those nations...but it didn't turn out well.

Back to Canada....he...

Canada’s policy reset needs to go much further than trade to address Trump shock effects

"The Trump 2.0 administration’s tariff threats – unprecedented since the Second World War – and other fundamentally disruptive U.S. policy shifts make it essential for Canada to pursue a sweeping strategic and tactical policy reset to boost economic, environmental, infrastructure and research resiliency."

"Success demands looking far beyond trade retaliation measures. It requires applying a long-term lens and systemic approach to a broad range of areas, including the urgent need to decisively address accelerating climate change, declining natural and physical public assets, and serious weaknesses in the funding of universities and research."

"Three core tenets should guide Canada’s strategy of revitalization and resiliency – an emphasis on long-term thinking, a focus on systems approaches and large-scale new investments in natural public capital, infrastructure, people and research."
