The forum that I was most at home at used names instead of usernames or handles, so that is what I did on this forum, too. We didn’t use our actual name (although some people chose to do that), but just made up a name that we liked, or “borrowed” a name from a favorite author or person. We even had a DB Cooper on that forum for a while, as well as a few famous writers.
It was a lot easier to see each other as people with an actual name instead of some weird username that no one could relate to.

My avatar is Raoul Walsh, a famous, prolific, underrated Movie Director out of the past. His birth name was Albert Edward Walsh, and he changed his first name to Raoul. While filming "Old Arizona" in the role of the Cisco Kid, a jackrabbit ran and jumped in front of his car on location and the shattered windshield damaged his eye. When asked if he wanted a glass eye, he said no, as he would only have to take it out every time he got into a brawl. See Raoul Walsh thread
