I've noticed the bigger birds are the ones who make the messes around the feeders. There is a pecking order based on size. The little ones get chased away by the bigger ones. The little ones have developed a grab-and-go technique. No time to hang around and make a mess.

Here the crows bathing in birdbath splashes the water out so we have to keep refilling it.
