TONY' THOUGHT JOURNAL 2.0

I've had 16 weeks of radiation treatment, and so far, I've been able to deal with the side effects.
My oncologist has suggested some over the counter meds to help reduce the discomfort of the side effects. Now, in addition to the pills I was already taken, I take Advil and cranberry pills three times a day.

I've met some really nice people in the waiting room who are going through the same process I am. What's nice is that we are open with each other and will discuss any issues we are having. For the most part, we all seem to have the same side effects.

10 more radiation treatments to go before I can "ring the bell." If I have the courage, I would like to read a small poem I wrote for the wonderful people there who do this job every day and are the most helpful people I've met in my life.

Here's the poem, I worried it may sound stupid.

Thanks to MSK
I'm on my way
To enjoy another day
MSK's Angel's they do their things
I ring this bell in the hope that they will get their wings

Tony, Jake and I are still thinking of you and hoping this will be behind you soon and healing is complete.

Tony when you speak from the heart, your words are heard in their hearts!

Without going into all the details, I wound up in the ER this morning. This week I've been having problems with my heart rate, today my blood pressure was high. Wife and daughter insisted I call emergency. So far I had a chest xray and blood test. It's boring just laying here. I have to go talk later.

Sorry @Tony Page. I hope it all works out.

Last week was a difficult week medically. It started off on Monday with me having a low heart rate of 44 BPM. My doctors decided for me to stop taking a hormone pill I take for prostate cancer. Within a day of not taking that pill, my rate went up to the mid to high fifties.

Friday, I decided to pull some garbage cans to the curb for pickup. After the first one, my chest was pounding, and I thought my heart was going to pop out of my chest. I went inside. I felt I needed to sit. After a few minutes, I took an oxymeter reading of my heart rate. It was 149 BPM. I took my blood pressure it was 167 over 65. My wife said I was white like a sheet. she and my daughter decided I should go to the ER. I was there for 10 hours. They ran some tests, and the results were all good. I met a heart specialist that I was trying to get an appointment with. He called his office and told them to squeeze me in.I will be seeing him next week.

Since I missed a day of radiation treatment. I will have to make it up the Tuesday after Labor Day.

I have 5 more radiation treatments left. I can't wait for it to be over.

Yesterday (Tuesday), I completed my radiation treatment for prostate cancer. I had a total of 26 treatments over 6 weeks.
I'm glad it's over. Some of the side effects were/are miserable.

I was told I would start feeling a little better in a week, but it will take 3 months to be back to the pretreatment self.

I'm worried about my strength. My right leg is not able to climb up steps.
I am looking forward to making a to-do list for when I'm feeling better.

I had some heart issues during treatment, and it's possible it was cause by the radiation. I did see a cardiologist who scheduled a few heart tests in October.

I'm going to be 82 this October, I keep thinking, do I really want to go through all of this? I hope it's worth it.

I know the feeling @Tony Page, but I think you have people who love you and want you to stick around as long as possible.

Congrats to both you and @Cody Fousnaugh for being able to suffer through all this stuff.

Hang in there Tony, living is a life-long habit! We have found a two step, lightweight cane that helps my wife with the stairs. We found it on amazon.

Sorry I haven't been more active. I did want to bring you up to speed on what's going on. I finished the radiation a little over two weeks ago, the oncologist told me in about 2 weeks after the radiation I'll feel a little better, but it will take 3 months before I start feeling how I did before I started the radiation.

I haven't been feeling myself. The radiation kind of gives you a sunburn internally and sometimes externally that has to heal. I feel fatigue and tingling in my arms and legs, and it feels like I have a heavy flu.I nap a lot, and don't go anywhere unless it's important. I don't want to drive.

I'm OK, just tired, many a time I want to write a thought down but I fall asleep. I'm hoping to get some energy back soon so I can do some things around here.

I'm not able to do anything really physical, so I figure I'd do something sitting down. I have a jar of wheat pennies that I collected over the years, so I purchased a book to put them in. Now I'm a coin collector. I know nothing about collecting coins, but so far, it's been fun.

I've been reading as many posts as I can. Hopefully, I'll be able to contribute more soon.

Well we are all glad you got through it and are still with us @Tony Page.

This Tuesday will make it 4 weeks since my last radiation treatment. I had 26 radiation treatments that were given on weekdays I had the weekends off. Once a week, I would meet with the radiation oncologist and his nurse. Before I sat down with the radiation oncologist, I first would meet with the nurse for about 10 to 15 minutes. She would take my vitals and question me about how I was feeling, and this would be the time to explain what side effects I might be having from the radiation treatment. Everything is recorded, and it gives them the opportunity to treat any side effects I might have. It seemed to me that their objective was to make me as comfortable as possible for the 26 radiation treatments. So basically, one day during the week, I'd have my radiation treatment and have an appointment with the radiation doctor.

Another thing I found interesting was that the technicians would walk you to the radiation room and, on the way , they question you about how you are doing, "How was your night? How was the weekend? Next thing I knew, apparently, if I complained about something, I would be called in to meet the nurse and/or the doctor. It was good to know that if I needed to get information to the doctor, I could use this second-hand method.

I was told by the oncology doctor I should start feeling a little better the first week after treatment, and after 3 months, I should feel like I did before treatment. It is now almost 4 weeks after treatment, and today was the first day I felt pretty good. I even went shopping. The fatigue had me feeling like I had the flu. My arms and legs were like lead. I was afraid to drive, so I stayed home most of the time and slept a lot.

My next appointment with the radiation oncologist is February of 26th, I do have an appointment in November with the hormone oncologist. In the third week of October, I will be put through a series of heart tests by my cardiologist.

I have not taken the hormone pill for about 2 months now, and until I complete my heart test and it proves good, I'll be off of it.

I hope all is well with all of you. I Think and pray for my chat friends daily.

Good morning Tony! Thanks for your update on your treatment. I have been praying for you, as you come to mind, and my hope is that you will be able to ease back into your normal routines, as well as you have done, becoming a patient. Sometimes we can feel like we are on a medical treadmill. Like the people-mover at the airport, it helps us get to where we are headed. Speaking of observation, how has your bird camera been working out? Have you gone ahead with getting a second one? Bless you Brother.
