Without Cabooses, There's No Wave for a Kid

"The demise of the small red car bringing up the rear was disparaging to generations like mine. Kids who grew up parking bicycles long enough to count the cars in a passing train and then wave to the man riding in the caboose. ... We were confident that a friendly greeting was essential training for the job because someone was always in the caboose to wave at any youngster watching a train go by."

Production of the last caboose occurred in 1981. They are now replaced by FRED (Flashing Rear End Device).
