Staten island is now considering seceding from New York and becoming New York State's second-largest city. It was tried in the 1990s, but Rudy Giuliani negotiated a deal that kept them in. The majority of Staten island voted for Trump in 2024 and did not vote for Mamdani in the recent election, so the secession movement appears to be moving forward. This has happened in other U.S. cities, so it is not impossible to do. It would simply remove the island from the consolidation that occurred many years ago combining individual cities into NYC and making them boroughs of the city.
