There is an interesting background to this candy bar. It first came out around 1920, which was during Babe Ruth’s time as a famous baseball player, so it appears likely that the candy bar was named after him, or that was at least a consideration. However, since they didn’t actually pay Babe Ruth anything for using his name on the candy bar, the company said it was named after President Grover Cleveland’s daughter who was named Ruth, and called the candy bar Baby Ruth after her.
Because young Ruth had died some years before the candy bar came out, and Cleveland was no longer president, this story does not seem very likely. Ruth Cleveland was a sickly child and passed away at age 12 from diphtheria complications, according to what i was reading.
So, by the 50’s, when the song came out, this was already an “old”candy bar.
