Are you saving up for something you are wanting in the near future?

I am looking at buying a road legal quad bike here in England, UK but the insurance is very expensive at the moment.

That sounds like something you would really enjoy when you get it, @Smithy ! My oldest son has a motorcycle that he uses mainly for off-road riding, and he really enjoys doing that.
I am not saving up for anything right now , except for the proverbial “rainy day”, which I hope never becomes necessary.

Is this a 4-wheeled ATV altered to make it street legal with proper tires and lights and signals? I'd expect these to require a driver's license with a motorcycle endorsement, but perhaps the laws have been liberalized in some jurisdictions.

Pushing 70, I'm entering "mid-stage retirement" and that alters my view of both extreme activities and handling money. I'm not satisfied with a life bound to the rocking chair but I won't be dancing on pitched rooftops anytime soon either.

No longer working, my "savings" are pretty much where they'll ever be. Now I focus on keeping them from eroding under inflation, increasing costs in general, and fiat currencies worth less every day.

That doesn't mean I won't spend a bit of cash on hobbies, of course. That rocking chair in front of game shows and soaps isn't attractive at all. But I'm still pretty tight with the cash and seek out bargains and discounts on items.

When I was younger I had kids, so Big Toys were never my priority. But if it fits your lifestyle more power to you!

Transmission for my old van, it is almost beyond repair.
People already want to cuss us out or worse for not driving 80mph in a 45, we do have to slow down at times to let the trans catch up, which really gets to them.
Jakes turning the van, truck up now. Putting a manifold on the truck, its an 86 and we got it for $600 and Jake did the body work, replaced the engine and did body work and painted it. So it looks like a different truck.

I saved as much as possible for my entire working life, so that I could retire as comfortably as the times would allow. For a country boy I thought I was doing ok, but when the time my forced retirement came, after paying all of my debts, my retirement fund only lasted two years. However, since I was forced into retirement by a permanent workplace injury, I qualified for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, and while it isn't much... It's better than living in a tent in the woods.

After I moved to Eureka and met Cindy, about six month later she started talking about moving to Alaska. I flatly refused to do that. It's too cold in the winter for my taste. Since we always had a little money left at the end of the month I was able to save $100 a month. I figured that saving $1,200 a year, it would take me about ten years to save enough for a Princess Cruise to Alaska. But while I never mentioned to her exactly how much I had been saving, I would spend a little of it on family vacations every year.

My plan was to take Cindy to Alaska for our Silver (25th) Anniversary. But it never happened...

Mama always said I should save my money for a rainy day. And years later, there I was living on the misty Redwood Coast in a borderline rain forest, where about half of all days were rainy days. On many rainy days, you could find Cindy and I doin' the Old Folks Boogie (sitting on the front porch) watching life happen. We never spent any money to do that, other the cost of our Tea, Cocoa or Coffee. So I was wondering, did Mama actually say "You will save money on a rainy day..."

We live comfortably here and have a bit of a nest egg. As long as Social Security continues and Alaska continues to give us a property tax break, we will be just fine. We, too, spend many summer evenings on the deck or the patio watching the world after the days chores are done. Not many chores left, just the garden mostly, since we no longer have kids at home or livestock other than chickens. Just two old people....

Old people can have 'golden years' if they look at it just right. I used to struggle to get work done. Now I look at weeds that 'should have' been taken care of after such a bad year and think, 'I can get to them' later or in the spring. I find comfort talking to Jesus, get my exercise fighting with youtube, do what I want when I want to....
In my first marriage when we had nothing, My Dad would say I was so happy, I didn't know how miserable I was. I think that still holds. I no longer NEED anything.

Yeah, we still get money from the state, but it is not the legally recognized amount. The previous governor tried to sell the State of Alaska to China. Fortunately, Trump was President and the deal was stopped. If Biden had been in office, the U.S. might have been reduced to 49 states. That same governor stopped paying the legally-mandated dividend and he was upheld by the state Supreme court that he had appointed. Under the law, each Alaskan present in the state at the time that was done is now owed about $16,000. I doubt we will ever see that money though. We get $1000 this year to keep us quiet.

You can't be serious. Didn't they teach you about this in school? All states, including Alaska, are sovereign entities with their own government and constitution. This means that the federal government does not own the state in a way that would allow for its sale. I suggest that you look that up for yourself on a government website, just so you know I am not making things up as I go along...

Not exactly but de facto. The governor was negotiating with China (President Xi) to bring Chinese labor and engineering in build a pipeline to carry natural gas from the North Slope to tidewater somewhere in southern Alaska for shipment to China. If you know anything about how China operates the Belt and Road Initiative, you would know that China always comes out of the deal with some sort of real estate, usually a port but it can be the rights to build military bases or other facilities. THAT is what the governor was offering, which would be de facto selling the state to China. China would probably take Nome, which is being developed now for Coast Guard and possible Navy operations. Not click bait and not a video. Fortunately, that governor was voted out as Biden came in, so there was no chance for him to allow it to go through.

Interesting. I get emails that allow me to just click on the discussion and it takes me to it. This one would not let me either.
This does not happen with things like gardening, pets, things we buy etc. Only on more sensitive topics.
I wonder why/how.
