Ponds

I remember seeing large goldfish in a beautiful pond, where the goldfish were swimming or hibernating under the ice! It was a beautiful sight to behold. It was in a sheltered area of the yard, near to where we were working. They looked like fire in the ice!
Yes, as the water depths got less, the pan fish did not do so well. But the goldfish I allowed someone to 'winter over' do very well. We have used goldfish in horse troughs to keep the mosquito larva under control. Hope the pond goldfish do the same and they don't eat too many tadpoles.

I have a 1/4 acre pond we had stocked with pan fish. Believe it or not, water birds bring fry and eggs into the pond so we didn't have to do it.

Mary, what fry and eggs? We had a pond with Koi and Goldfish, we gave them to a neighbor when we built the house. Some were 8 or 10 year old.
When a child mama stocked our lake with bass and brim, guess the birds brought in the cat fish.

Joe our fish would come up when we called them, but any other voice they stayed in the deep.
I was looking for pictures but didn't find them ,it was heart shaped and the grandkid's dug it 30 years ago.

Fry, being baby fish and eggs of fish brought in on feathers and legs of birds. I have been begging for bullheads (a catfish)

The Pond
by
Richard Greene

There was a pond in my young years,
a place of reeds
reflected trees
and silky brown water
spilling over a weed-bearded dam,
a place where we swam from early spring
and skated in the early darkness of winter evenings,
a place of mysterious depths
where creatures vanished
into a green void
while tadpoles and minnows
swarmed on its verges
like exclamation points.
