EXCLUSIVE – FBI Director Kash Patel told Fox News Digital that the case involving two Chinese nationals who were charged Tuesday with allegedly smuggling a "dangerous biological pathogen" into the U.S. to study at the University of Michigan laboratory demonstrates a serious national security threat to America's food supply.

"This case is a sobering reminder that the Chinese Communist Party continues to deploy operatives and researchers to infiltrate our institutions and target our food supply, an act that could cripple our economy and endanger American lives," Patel told Fox in a statement. "Smuggling a known agroterrorism agent into the U.S. is not just a violation of law, it’s a direct threat to national security. I commend the FBI Detroit Division and our partners at CBP for stopping this biological threat before it could do real damage."

University of Michigan research fellow Yunqing Jian and her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu – both citizens of the People's Republic of China – have been charged in a criminal complaint with conspiracy, smuggling goods into the United States, false statements, and visa fraud, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan announced Tuesday. The investigation is being conducted by the FBIand U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The couple are accused of smuggling a fungus called Fusarium graminearum, which scientific literature classifies as a "potential agroterrorism weapon," according to the Justice Department. Federal prosecutors note the noxious fungus causes "head blight," a disease of wheat, barley, maize, and rice, and "is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year."

The Justice Department also says fusarium graminearum’s toxins cause vomiting, liver damage, and "reproductive defects in humans and livestock."

According to the criminal complaint, Jian, 33, allegedly received Chinese government funding for her work on the pathogen in China.

Federal prosecutors say Jian’s electronics contain information "describing her membership in and loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party."

Liu, 34, allegedly works at a Chinese university where he conducts research on the same pathogen, according to the complaint. Federal prosecutors say "he first lied" but then admitted to smuggling Fusarium graminearum into the United States through the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. His alleged goal was to conduct research on the pathogen at the laboratory at the University of Michigan where his girlfriend, Jian, worked, according to court documents.

The FBI arrested Jian in connection with the allegations, and she was scheduled to make her first federal court appearance in Detroit on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Justice Department. It's unclear whether Liu has been taken into custody.

"The alleged actions of these Chinese nationals – including a loyal member of the Chinese Communist Party – are of the gravest national security concerns," U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon said in a statement. "These two aliens have been charged with smuggling a fungus that has been described as a ‘potential agroterrorism weapon’ into in the heartland of America, where they apparently intended to use a University of Michigan laboratory to further their scheme."

STATE DEPARTMENT SAYS IT WILL 'AGGRESSIVELY' REVOKE VISAS FOR CHINESE STUDENTS

CBP Director of Field Operations Marty Raybon said the criminal charges levied against Jian and Liu "are indicative of CBP’s critical role in protecting the American people from biological threats that could devastate our agricultural economy and cause harm to humans; especially when it involves a researcher from a major university attempting to clandestinely bring potentially harmful biological materials into the United States."

"This was a complex investigation involving CBP offices from across the country, alongside our federal partners," Raybon said. "I’m grateful for their tireless efforts, ensuring our borders remain secure from all types of threats while safeguarding America’s national security interests."

Jian is still listed as a post-doctoral research fellow on the University of Michigan website as of Tuesday afternoon. Fox News Digital reached out to the University of Michigan for comment on Tuesday but did not immediately hear back.

The Justice Department noted that a trial cannot be held on felony charges in a complaint, and a determination will be made about whether to seek a felony indictment when the investigation is completed.

The charges were announced at a time when the Trump administration is cracking down on what they categorize as anti-American radicals at U.S. universities, particularly foreign students engaged in antisemitic or anti-Israel protests on campus.

Last week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio also announced he would be "aggressively" revoking the student visas for Chinese nationals, "including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields."

What China's spies are doing in the U.S., and what happens when they're caught

What China's spies are doing in the U.S., and what happens when they're caught
May 18, 2025 / 7:14 PM EDT / CBS News

"According to the latest assessment from America's intelligence agencies, China "remains the most active and persistent cyber threat to [the] U.S." Its hackers have infiltrated the U.S. government, the private sector, and critical infrastructure, like water systems and power grids. Hacking, however, has not replaced Beijing's pursuit of old-fashioned human intelligence. China's Communist Party remains intent on leveraging a worldwide network of covert agents to monitor and influence events outside its own borders, and to surveil and intimidate Chinese dissidents right here in America. Tonight, you'll hear about why China's spies are on the rise, and what happens when one gets caught."

Jim Lewis: This is – in scale, and in scope, and in brazenness – the biggest espionage operation against the U.S. in its history. Jim Lewis is a former U.S. diplomat whose direct experience with China's intelligence agencies spans more than 30 years. He says since President Xi Jinping came to power in 2012, China's spies no longer seem to fear the U.S.

Norah O'Donnell: Why do China's espionage efforts appear to be growing so big so fast under Xi Jinping?

Jim Lewis: Xi Jinping thinks, "It's China's time to move to the center of the world stage." Xi Jinping looks at the West and at the U.S. and says, "These people are feeble-minded, and I'm gonna be able to beat them." It may not be a household name in the U.S. but according to Lewis, China's Ministry of State Security, or MSS, is now the largest and most active spy agency in the world. In a propaganda video the spy agency posted last year on China's largest social network, a voiceover boasts that the MSS "senses things before they happen" and "fights against evil." READ MORE

After doing my usual "30 Second Spot Check" I find no other news agencies are reporting on this. And considering Fox's reputation as the Fake News Network, it reminds me that If this story was based on facts, everyone would be talking about it. But nobody else is. Not even Newsmax...

China took advantage of a feeble minded president and his malicious administration to spy and harm the US in many ways that we are still unaware of. I hope more Americans wake up. Some have, some are still in denial and some are hopeless. And we should remember that some hate America as much as they hate Trump and would be happy to see our form of government overthrown.

Remember the drone swarms? I still think they were connected to China.

There is a possibility that your search engine is “broke” or after the Exclusivity dinned a bit and after your 30 second search, other agencies picked up the ball and ran with it.
I merely typed in “Chinese student smuggles fungus into the U.S.” and got pages of different news agencies reporting on the matter.

You're right. I've joked about it many times "What do Google and the Government have in common?" "Ask them a question, and they tell you what they what you to know." And AI is only making that worse.

However, while we can blame this on Google, Fox News' overall reputation is all based on the Fox News Network. The only Fox News that I trust is on KTVU Channel 2 in Oakland, California.

China is using the world’s largest known online disinformation operation to harass Americans, a CNN review finds (2023)

"The Chinese government has built up the world’s largest known online disinformation operation and is using it to harass US residents, politicians, and businesses—at times threatening its targets with violence, a CNN review of court documents and public disclosures by social media companies has found."

"The onslaught of attacks – often of a vile and deeply personal nature – is part of a well-organized, increasingly brazen Chinese government intimidation campaign targeting people in the United States, documents show."

"Victims face a barrage of tens of thousands of social media posts that call them traitors, dogs, and racist and homophobic slurs. They say it’s all part of an effort to drive them into a state of constant fear and paranoia."

"Often, these victims don’t know where to turn. Some have spoken to law enforcement, including the FBI – but little has been done. While tech and social media companies have shut down thousands of accounts targeting these victims, they’re outpaced by a slew of new accounts emerging virtually every day."

"Known as “Spamouflage” or “Dragonbridge,” the network’s hundreds of thousands of accounts spread across every major social media platform have not only harassed Americans who have criticized the Chinese Communist Party, but have also sought to discredit US politicians, disparage American companies at odds with China’s interests and hijack online conversations around the globe that could portray the CCP in a negative light."

"Private researchers have tracked the network since its discovery more than four years ago, but only in recent months have federal prosecutors and Facebook’s parent company Meta publicly concluded that the operation has ties to Chinese police."

"Meta announced in August it had taken down a cluster of nearly 8,000 accounts attributed to this group in the second quarter of 2023 alone. Google, which owns YouTube, told CNN it had shut down more than 100,000 associated accounts in recent years, while X, formerly known as Twitter, has blocked hundreds of thousands of China “state-backed” or “state-linked” accounts, according to company blogs."

"Still, given the relatively low cost of such operations, experts who monitor disinformation warn the Chinese government will continue to use these tactics to try to bend online discussions closer to the CCP’s preferred narrative, which frequently entails trying to undermine the US and democratic values."

“We might think that this is confined to certain chatrooms, or this platform or that platform, but it’s expanding across the board,” Rep. Mike Gallagher, chairman of the House Select Committee on the CCP, told CNN. “And it’s only a matter of time before it happens to that average American citizen who doesn’t think it’s their problem right now.” READ MORE

Realizing that I’m a bit off topic,
to be sure, it isn’t that I do not trust any News networking, it’s just that I do not trust Opinion networking; which seems to be the prevaling preference of news delivery by all of the legacy media.
The very second a broadcaster goes astray from “who, what, when, where and only sometimes why”, I know if I am interested enough I will have to do some in depth research so that the truth will be cleansed from platitudes, innuendos, name calling, virtue signaling and general BS.

An opinion called “the news” is a plant that is intentionally created to promote bias and in some cases, rage and violence.

I don't think it takes a lot for the CCP to find domestic sympathizers either. So there is an opportunity to leverage their own agents by having them collect "cells" of locals and then pass on talking points and scripts they'll willingly parrot.

Not only within the US itself, but also in "Commonwealth" English-speaking countries who have no problem attacking the US themselves out of jealousy or fear.

What bothers me the most about Fox News are those 2 big mouth redneck females. I have to keep adjusting the volume. I'm a bit of a redneck female myself, but I do know when to act civil or shut up.

More information about dangerous crop funguses being smuggled in by Chinese . It is good that we are revoking the student visas for the ones who are here in colloege, but there are probably a lot more here with work visas who need to have them revoked , too. The ones we are catching will hopefully be prosecuted or at least deported.

Nobody's forcing you to watch it. It's your idea... ;)

I wouldn't call myself a redneck, but I did grow up in farm country with parents from Alabama, right up there on the western Alabama / Tennessee border just north of Haleyville, and I learned when to shut up without their input. And I'm always civil. A bit of a comedian, perhaps, but I'm always polite about it. I always says please and thank y'all.

A few years ago, on July 4th, 96!!! shootings happened in Chicago--2 1/2 hours south of me and only one agency broadcast about it. The main headline on tv etc was a (black) man holed up in a cabin in California with substantial arms. In the end they burned the cabin down around him saving the community.
I was so angry because of what was broadcast I called WBAY and let the man I talked to have it with both barrels. Why talk about the item in California when this insane amount of shootings went on right near us?
I was told they put out the news that was sent to them and they were directed to.'
96 Black on black shootings did not fit the Democratic narrative so was not sent?
All Your agencies report on the same drivel that serve them. Of course Fox news has their slant but you are not informed.
