Over time he "lost me" because he became more and more associated with first drug culture and later what we we'd now call "woke" social policies.
It is very unfortunate that many old performer's quirks gradually rose in prominence to impede the enjoyment of more mainstream fans. This was probably more the fault of the media than it was theirs though.
