Guns In Rural Areas

My wife was trapped in the barn on more than one occasion by moose. She would go out to milk and couldn't get back to the house. Do you remember her bear encounter when I was at the greenhouse and she was working with plants getting ready for sale? I posted that before I think.

Don that would really put an end to walking around the property without being 'loaded for bear; for me.
Your wife is a brave woman. Only thing besides bugs here I watch for is poisonous snakes, which we have all kinds and lots of them.

No snakes of any kind here. I do have a small firing range on the property, but as the number of neighbors increase, I am reluctant to use it. I only ever used it for handguns and .22s. I can use an occasional shotgun too, but I never shoot the "big guns" here. Of course, for self defense from animals or people, I would use whatever is needed. The rule here for animals is to "use enough gun" as Robert Ruark used to say. The Troopers don't like you shooting animals with small-caliber weapons as it is considered cruel.

I agree with the Troopers, no sense in an animal suffering. Jake hunting much of hid young life, but doesn't care for it now. He could if he had to. He loves wildlife. No longer any bears, panthers, fox here now that rural went urban.
We had all those when we first moved here. Now its just gators, snakes occasional raccoon . and BUGS.

I don't hunt any longer either, and I never really enjoyed hunting. I did it to put food on the table for my family. I also salvaged roadkill meat at 2:00 AM in the dark at -30 F. to do the same and keep the animals from being wasted.

Don we do what we have to sometimes. It is good though that you can do whatever it takes to survive.
Jake shot and skinned his last deer a year or so ago, remember, I put it up on SOC, the deer broke her neck jumping a fence and we tried to save her but couldn't, Jake shot, skinned her and he and the dogs had deer meat for a while.
