For: Self-Defense, Hunting or Target Shooting?

Ours is only for target shooting, unless absolutely necessary (Self-Defense), which hasn't happened in the 25 years we've been together. We have two 9mm, a 380, a .22 pistol and two rifles. My wife mainly shoots the 380. We've been to both, indoor and outdoor ranges, but prefer indoor ones that have electric target "out and in" switch. Each firearm has a trigger lock and all are in a handgun/rifle case. Each rifle has a scope on top and the handguns have a laser mounted under the barrel. IOW, we need all the help we can get! LOL

Lucky for me, my wife loves target shooting!

Now, question is...........do you shoot at all? There are those couples that have firearms, but the wife isn't into shooting at all. None of my wife's family is into firearms and even our nephew asks his mother-in-law, my wife's older sister, "why do so many people have firearms?" She was the wrong person to ask, being that she doesn't like them at all.

Out of two indoor ranges and two outdoor ranges we've been members of, very, very few ladies were at them when we were.

Inherited: 2 pistols, two .22 ga rifles, and a shot gun. I've only used one rifle one time, to scare away 2 dogs that attacked one of our goats.

I got my Small Arms Training while in the Navy onboard a Destroyer at sea. Before meeting my wife, I had never owned a firearm, many due to the cost. I was very surprised at my wife's interest in firearms and shooting. She simply wasn't afraid of them, but neither of us like the "military" style ones. If I tell a lady (stranger) that my wife owns/shoots, they are very proud of her doing it. They can also get pretty surprised at her age and shooting. IOW, I love to brag about my wife and her shooting capabilities.

My wife took a pistol class I have been encouraging her to take for years. She has always been a good shot, but was not raised around guns, and didn't know a lot about them. That is being remedied. The drug-fueled crazy looking into our windows at night was the impetus that pushed her to take the class.

Yeah, the guy was cruising our area. He "visited" several of the neighbors' places looking for open doors. I don't know if I have told the story here, but we found him outside trying to get into our truck, then spotted him on the deck looking in the windows from the dark. He had "visited" a guy across the lake, and apparently went back there after I drove him away a second time. The Troopers were called several times to address the issue, but they didn't. Eventually he attacked the other neighbor who shot him with a shotgun and killed him. We found his backpack and coat in our chicken house and notified Troopers. It was investigated and no charges were filed. I don't know what would have happened if he had attacked a female living alone. In places without guns, those who are stronger or who are armed always win. Sad, but true. Guns are equalizers for the weaker and less healthy among us.

It is also interesting that the police slogan To Protect and To Serve, is just that, a slogan. They are under no legal requirement to do so. Not sure what their legal requirement is. I have called a couple of times with unsatisfactory results. And I am too old to drag a guy into my house. for the Castle Doctrine rule.

In our case, they responded but were restricted by the rules they have to follow. At one point, they tracked him to a house, but the door was locked and they said they didn't have a reason to break into the house and they were not sure who the house belonged to. A lowly guy came around twine, then there was a giant trooper truck that was lit up like a Christmas tree that dwarfed the little Ford SUV the first Trooper was in. Generally, the Alaska State Troopers are very good considering we have 36 Troopers covering an area the size of the State of West Virginia, and there are no sheriffs here.

Just how many owners of firearms could actually "pull the trigger" and shoot, and possibly kill, somebody? Many times that question remains unanswered until a threat is there. Many owners will say "yes, I could do it", but in reality, could they?

For us, we'd have to unlock our gun/rifle case and take the trigger lock off of any firearm we have, put in a loaded magazine and go from there. That all takes time, but "whatever". As for me, if me, my wife or both of us were threatened, I could "pull the trigger". As for my wife, I seriously doubt it, but, given the situation...................

Whether I have guns or not isn't something I will post on any public forum. The element of surprise is the best deterrent.

Threatening to use a gun when you have no intention of shooting the person and making a lethal shot, is foolish and has led to many deaths of the victims, especially in the days of the old west.

Well, both firearm forums that I'm on are public. We all discuss what we have, etc..

A gun not available is not a defensive weapon. If you should have a home invasion, your gun under lock and key and unloaded would be useless. If you only intend to use them for target shooting or plinking, or hunting, then no problem there.

Yep, plinking/target shooting only. However, even though they are "under lock and key", they are still there and available. Not as available, but still better than not having any firearms at all.

I don't do concealed carry, and when I bring something to the farm for varmints, it has to be unloaded in the vehicle here. It tickles me, the thought that I have to make sure to say Wait a Minute to the fox carrying my chicken off as I load. I could keep something in the barnhouse but worry about it being used by someone other than a fat old lady.

Sort of wild, but both of the firearm forums I'm on, members wonder why we don't carry and/or why our firearms have trigger locks on each, unloaded and sitting in a locked Rifle/Gun case. In fact, one Moderator told the members, "If they don't want to carry or use their firearms for self-defense, that is entirely up to them. They shouldn't be criticized for it and I don't want to read anymore criticism from any of you about their feelings. Don't distract anyone from wanting to target shoot only."
