Exercising

One of my 2 New Year's resolutions is to exercise more often. I do situps, a few (very few) pushups, sit on my rowing machine, and then on my exercise bike. The whole process takes me about 15 minutes. I am 136 pounds and my goal is to be 130-132.

For now, when we walk around a grocery store, that's enough for us. However, we do have the Wii Game, but won't set it up again until after we move. Our powerboating days are now over.

Jake is working on the boat now; our granddaughter sent him a boat seat for his b-day. It runs great for a 40-yr old Evinrude on a old Jon boat. Jake totally rebuilt both of them, like his 1986 truck was gutted when he got it for $600.00. My old 31 yo van is doing fine too. Tags and insurance are low rates for them.

I miss my walks already, but it is so hot now that walking the trails in the sun is no fun.
I'll have to get up before daylight to walk. I have to have time for at least 2 cups of coffee before I walk.

My favorite form of exercise now is swimming, which I do at the fitness center. We try to go there about 3 times a week, depending on our schedule and also the weather. Any time there is lightning, they close down the pool, even though it is an inside pool and should be completely safe in a thunderstorm.
I love walking, but my balance is not so good anymore, especially if the ground is not level, so I pretty much stopped taking Poodle out for walks now.

I am also using the vibration plate just about every day, and the information said that 15 minutes on the plate is the same as a half hour of exercise. It does get my heart rate up to right around 124, which is about the same as it goes when I am swimming.
I enjoy the vibration plate, and I can feel it helping my blood circulate faster when I use it.

Exercise is kind of a jinxie type of word that is rarely used among those who train or workout unless we’re talking about a singular exercise which is included within a training session.
Yes, I know that it’s sort of petty but the word workout or training is conducive to muscular improvement beyond the norm whilst exercising can be anything from walking the dog to doing a couple of pushups.
It’s kind of like saying “diet” to a person who hates diets. The two words, “ Nutritional program” seem to bring about a more positive attitude and results.

I went from nearly 300lbs down to 199 and am now carrying 235 quite well. My arms went from the size of my wrists to 19 1/2”. My chest went from 48 to 54 and I could go on with the rest of the stats but do know, just about 10 years ago I should have been dead.

Due to some organ failures, the VA doctors and nurses said I should have died but I didn’t and I do give all thanks to God for some really massive healing.
After all that, I made the decision to honor that healing by committing to a training regimen that most men half my age wouldn’t even consider.
I not only workout but with that I do study human anatomy in as much as the physiology, chemistry and the neurological aspects of natural bodybuilding are all part of knowing this creature my mind is so heavily attached to.

The goal of it all is to not only honor God but I’m now 75+ and sometime between next year and if I hit 80, I want to compete in the Amateur division of the Masters Natural Bodybuilding competitions and…..I want to win!

That's such an awesome weight-loss journey! Good luck in your competition as well!

I know you understand anatomy and I am glad. I know backs. I used to worry about Sylvester Stallone in his youth. He has a slight defect mid-spine and with as much working out as he must have done over the years, he must have had someone guide him through that.

I have been doing too much sitting over the years after needing a hip replacement. I had fallen hard off my horse and then I fell over a cinder block while cutting wood. I atrophied. M y opposite thigh went bad and I could not find anyone to fix it. I can't lift my leg without the help of a cane. But, having a farm, I get seasonal exercise and climbing over hay bales is always an adventure. I love my ski machine for rebuilding muscle in the winter. Paying attention, I find that abdominal (core) muscles help all aspects of exercise.

Just a mention:
The overwhelming thought about doing core workouts is that we’re only looking at those 6 pack abs that we want.
Truth is, the core takes in a lot more territory than just the abdominal muscles.
it takes a lot of practice but to build a brain/muscle connection, the parts of the core can be separated into the diaphragm, pelvic floor muscles, the glutes, lower spinal muscles and yes, the abs which can all be worked separately or en mass with the rest of the core.

The glutes? Yup. I had a trainer who was doing planks ( great core workout) ask me if his back was straight and my reply was that if he could voluntarily tighten and loosen his glutes, his back was straight. He took the advice and has passed it on to his clients and other trainers.
Note: Doing planks is a great way to start building those brain to muscle connections. Concentrating on moving each muscle included within a grouping gives a fantastic insight as to whether any “exercise” is hitting the muscles you want to build.

Since we really can't do any kind of outdoor exercising during the summer here when it's 100 plus degrees, I went to our garage (we use for storage) and got our handheld small weights and door pulley. We will start doing some lifting and using the pulley. Also ordered, from Amazon, an Under Desk Elliptical Electric, Ellipse Leg Exerciser for Seniors, Fully Assembled Seated Pedal Exerciser with Remote Control with Free Footstraps & 10 Adjustable Speeds. Don't know if we will like it or not. If not, pack it up and send it back for a full refund. And, since we will be signing another 10 month lease, due to my upcoming radiation therapy, we may end up setting up our Wii Game here.

One thing is for sure, we need more exercise than we've been getting!

They say the best exercise for us older folks is walking. And right now, pushing my wheelchair up and down the hallway is as good as it's going to get. It's about 100 yards to where I park my car, so I do that walk twice a day. That's double what the PT people at the last hospital I was in told me to do. But I'm hoping I can still ride my bike...

Update on Under Desk Elliptical Electric Ellipse Leg Exerciser: Got it yesterday and definitely didn't realize just how heavy it is. Didn't even open the box! Have decided to send it back to Amazon for a refund. What we really need, and will get after we move, is the sitting down small-floor walking type of exerciser. IOW, back and forth/walking type exerciser. Until we move, we will use the Treadmill in the Fitness Center in the office next to our apartment. When we lived in Jacksonville, FL., we used the Treadmill a few times in our apt. complex Fitness Center. We will try the ones here where we live.

Will set the Wii Game back up, because we remember just how much fun we had do those games (bowling, tennis and golf). I could hardly ever beat my wife bowling on the Wii Game!
