Best FREE video call alternative for Skype?

Skype is shutting down in May and pushing it's users to use Microsoft Teams, basically forcing people to pay for the ability to send video calls after 30 hours of use. I don't want to do that but I use Skype often, especially their video calls to chat with my better half. So now we're looking for a good free alternative that works on both Windows & Linux.

Does anyone have a good free alternative to Skype that they like?

That's no surprise to me. Micro$oft bought Skype in 2011 for $8B, and the writing was on the wall... Skype would be turned into Micro$oft something, like so much other software they have bought the makers of to get their hands on. Micro$oft should be the English word for "Corporate Greed."

Now they’re pushing everyone to use Microsoft teams. They’re saying its similar to Skype, but i’m not sure. Skype will be missed though.

Of course they are. Micro$oft's greed isn't going away any time soon. But since I don't have anyone to call except my son's family, and we prefer phones and my Doc's office, and they use Zoom, and I tell them I prefer phone or in person appointments. I tried Skype years ago to talk to my son that lives in Maryland, and we had so many problems with the connection we switched to some Fakebook Video thing. That wasn't any better so we concluded it might have been my low budget ISP. It was down a lot...

Then high speed Internet came to Humboldt Country, and I tried Skype again. Still no luck. So I gave up. We used to talk about once a month for a few minutes at a time, but at that time long distance calling cost a fortune. I talked to him for a half an hour once and it cost me $40.

But now I has me a cell phone. I think it has some kind of Skype or some installed on it, but I have a limited data plan. But we have had some really long phone conversations, all for free because my daughter gave me the phone on a second line she gets free. He's in the Navy and thus not home very much, but I talk to his wife and my granddaughters a good bit.

The only thing i have used for video calls is FaceTime , which is on all my Apple devices. It always works great, and you can call free to anywhere, even with my daughter who is overseas in the Netherlands, so that is what we always use, even if we are just doing an audio chat and not a video one.
