Well, the big meeting of the military brass began today with an address by Secretary of Was, Pete Hegseth to the generals and admirals of the U.S. military. Standards are going up. All physical standards will be to the male standards of years ago and any man or woman who cannot meet those standards will not be allowed into combat roles of any kind. He said there will be gender-neutral uniforms, so that all who can meet those standards will appear the same. All flag officers who are not willing to implement the new standards were asked to resign or retire. Also, appearance standards will be established for military purposes. Beards and other allowances will be removed. There will be no religious exemptions if the safety of the fighter or the unit will be affected. Very interesting and I think most of us who have served in the military are glad to see this day arrive. It was said that the military is a life-and-death business, not a social experiment.

The brass were called together, so that all will hear the same thing and any questions can be answered and all will again hear the same answers.

I was worried there may not be enough truly able bodied men to fill the need. Growing up at screens instead of sport fields or even outside...

There may be fewer @Mary Stetler. Hegseth said anyone who cannot pass the physical standards will not be in combat roles, although I didn't hear that they would leave the military. I think the generals are going to be held to higher physical standards as well. Of course, it could all be reversed by the next Democrat administration if there is one, and the men will be wearing tutus again and having gender surgery unless Congress elects to do something.

I think a lot of people will wonder why just a written announcement couldn't suffice. Or if it has to be verbal, why not a Zoom call. It seems like the targeted audience was not in the room.

The talk I have heard from military officers as a whole was that they were pleased with the new turn in the military, especially at the flag officer level. I don't know that they appreciate being held to physical fitness standards, but being allowed to do their jobs without being reported anonymously for discrimination, sexual harassment, and insensitivity is welcomed. Apparently there was a system in place that allowed lower ranks to file complaints against higher officers anonymously, and the officers involved had a very hard time defending themselves against anonymous complaints. That is now gone. You can still file complaints, but you have to face the person you are accusing. I assume that retribution will not be permitted, but I didn't hear anything about that part. Anything that endangers an individual or a unit in also now prohibited, so beards will be shaved as a gas mask or other protective gear cannot be sealed against the face. That apparently was permitted to Muslims, but that is now gone.

Because Trump has to be the center of attention. Even if what he does makes him look like a 2nd rate buffoon.

The pendulum swung waaaaaayyyyy too far to the left here too. Although there are some transgressions that might need to be reported, there needs to be a proper way, not just willy nilly.

Yes, this was the most expensive way of doing whatever they hoped to do. Apparently, they never heard of that Department of Government Efficiency. But Trump likes to get in his huffing and puffing. Jane Goodall once compared him to an aggressive, boisterous Chimpanzee. And Hegseth seemed to be hopped up on methamphetamine.

Mary unlike you and I and many others who did grow up with yards, fields, pastures, the majority of the youth today parents were more into big homes, new cars and wardrobes.
My grown grandkids, now having babies are proof of this.
First thing they do is buy a big house with little or no yard, then they both have to work, so the kids are raised in nursery's, of course they need a new auto to drop off kids, go to work for the new over-sized house and auto.
'The hand that rocked the cradle' is now rocking the Casba and the kids have no real guidance.
Also most children don't have fathers at home, because it is no longer against the law not to pay child support.
We learned to love and care for people and animals. Not perfect but I think life was easier on the mind body.

A couple times here I've put up the streets of major USA cities in the 50s-60s and now.
We allowed politicians to change our citizens into self-loathing and excessive apathetic 'subjects'.
Our youth is now paying for our ignorance of history and common wisdom.
I always loved history and philosophy from my 4th grand teacher to now and it is amazing how it still repeats itself.
I'm sure most famous philosopher's, both ancient and present were looking back instead of forward when they wrote, other than to warn us.

Playing the devil's advocate here, I was always angry that we took the best and brightest kids, trained them up and sent them off to fight in war. Did that not contribute to the survival of less good and bright people down the line?
In the old days, all young males had to go to war, but as society matured and the weapons got more complicated, only the better were selected. The old way "selected out" the weaker, less intelligent but the new way does select out the best and brightest.

Mary, I disagree, we sent anyone who could hold a weapon no matter their intellect. I visited some at the VA and one ward I never went back to on a visit, they were horrible injured.
Some did avoid the draft but most went. I knew many very wise and good people who went. I'll always honor those vets.

Here again Don, I don't agree, war is terrible thing. I think Eisenhower was right,

" Beware the military industrial complex". Although he did attack the vets he fought alongside in WW1,

The Bonus Army was a group of World War I veterans who marched on Washington, D.C., in 1932 to demand early payment of bonuses promised by the government, highlighting the struggles of Americans during the Great Depression.
