Since being the admin of a forum is a lot of work and expense, I wonder why some take on this task and responsibility?

They have the money and the time or they really don't have either, but do it anyway. Just a thought.

Nobody does anything without some kind of reward. It might not be a monetary reward. It might be emotional reward like the satisfaction of a warm thank you for a favor, etc.

The people on YouTube want viewers to hit the like button and subscribe. The more likes and subscribers they have, the more likely they will be to have paying ads. The more ads they have, the more money they make. Same might be true for forums. If a forum gets enough members, the owner might be able to sell ads.

The owner of the forum that we just lost wanted us to mention products that we bought and businesses that we bought from. I never knew why but I suspect it had something to do with money.

It was more than likely a brand partnership where he’d get paid a lot of money for promoting then product.

Especially if there were links to amazon or another site that has affiliate links.

So everytime the product is mentioned or someone buys the product, he receives a commission from the sale or money for clicks.

I don't know. But since he was nice enough to set up the forum for us, I mentioned purchases whenever I could. I'm sure it takes a lot of time and effort to keep a forum operating.

Yes. Like I said, nobody does anything if there is not some kind of reward.

Are you going to add ads later? I don't have a problem with that. I have Ad Block but I whitelist forums that I use and like.

Nope! :)
My forum is a hobby I am not here to make money.

I and 2 others started a forum a number of years ago with the hopes of meeting more people who were serious minded and liked to explore and do research. What became of it is a topic for another day but…..
To the topic at hand, I’d have to ask the question: Why does anyone do anything?

I love woodworking and building muscle albeit I am a retired chef and preacher.
Both extracurricular endeavors are expensive and take a LOT of time to achieve any modicum of success at either one but they both make me feel good and both, if properly done give me a sense of achievement and confidence.

If a person enjoys what they do and find they are good at it or at least, want to learn to be good at it, then you get out of it exactly what you put into it and maybe…..a little bit more.

It’s like asking anew: Why did the chicken cross the road? Because she could.

Hench, the reward.

That is only part of the story. That's how YouTuber's make money over what YouTube pays. YouTube, TikTok and I'm guessing there may be other such websites, run on monetized video channels. Some are monetized though YouTube and some are not, but most are. Some post fact based videos with all sorts of information, while others are just Clickbait channels that the only purpose is to make money. But MrBeast, the most Prolific YouTuber, with 380 million subscribers, 858 non-monetized videos and 77,023,434,630 views stands far above all others. But just because his channel isn't monetized by YouTube doesn't mean it isn't monetized like you said. His reasons for that are anyone's guess.

Here is a sample of videos:

On the YouTube Monetization Checker, a tool you can use to check whether YouTube channels are monetized or not, MrBeast has this to say:

Accomplishments:
- Raised $20,000,000 To Plant 20,000,000 Trees
- Removed 30,000,000 pounds of trash from the ocean
- Helped 2,000 people walk again
- Helped 1,000 blind people see
- Helped 1,000 deaf people hear
- Built wells in Africa
- Built and gave away 100 houses
- Adopted every dog in a shelter (twice)
- Given millions to charity
- Started my own snack company Feastables
- Started my own software company Viewstats
- Started Lunchly, a tasty, better-for-you lunch option
- Gave away a private island (twice)
- Gave away 1 million meals
- Gave away a chocolate factory
- I counted to 100k
- Ran a marathon in the world's largest shoes
- Survived 50 hours in Antarctica
- Recreated Squid Game in real life
- Created the largest competition show with 1000 people (Beast Games)
- Gave $5,000,000 to one person
- Passed T-Series to become most subscribed YouTube channel 🥹
you get it, I appreciate all of you so much :)

Now if even 20% of that is true and I have no idea if it is, but he has videos of some of it, MrBeast sounds like quite a human being. That is a lot of giving in a take, take, take world.
