So often, we don't have enough time to listen to our relatives, acquaintances, or friends. Yet they've been through so many interesting things and gained so much valuable experience..!!
That's why I'd like to create a little corner here on this big forum, where we can take the time to listen to each other's stories and memories, share ideas about what to tell our grandchildren, or talk about interesting and inexpensive games we've come up with.
I'll give it a try. Will you join me? Will you share your stories??
Come on, Grandma!! Tell us your stories!!

I have a story to tell, and it goes like this:

Once upon a time — and this is a true story! — there was a little girl. The little girl's name was Vica. She lived with her father, mother, and sibling.
She had recently started kindergarten. Vica loved going to kindergarten. She had a beautiful kindergarten teacher... so beautiful that you could look at the sun, but not at her.
One day, when little Vica came home from kindergarten, she was astonished to see a large truck standing in the yard, with strangers loading all their furniture onto it.
Terrified, she ran to her father:
"Daddy! Daddy! Why are they taking our furniture away? Don't let them!!"
That was when her father told her that they were leaving this house, leaving this town...
But even Daddy didn't know where they were going.
Vica wasn't sad for very long. She was going to ride in a truck! And then they would get off the truck and board a big train! Wow! This was going to be very exciting!!
Soon they set off in the big truck and arrived at the big train. But the traaaaain wasn't black, oh no! This train was different. There were no seats inside, but Vica didn't mind that either, because all their furniture was inside the railway wagon.
And then Mommy said:
"Well... I never thought I'd spend days travelling in a cattle wagon..."
With a loud whistle, the train began to move...
And with that, an entirely new life began — not only for little Vica, but for her whole family.

When I was growing up, my family went camping and fishing at one of the mountain lakes on most weekends in the summertime. I really loved going to these remote lakes and camping out for the weekend.
My mom would make fried chicken and potato salad, and bring along some canned pork and beans, which we called “Fishing Beans” because that was the only time we ever ate them.

The roads to the lakes were always backroads that were two dirt tire tracks with grass and weeds growing up in the middle, and we just had an old 1953 Buick that we had loaded with all the camping stuff, and not a four wheel drive, to drive up those old dirt roads. Grandpa Bailey would be following behind us in his 1951 Ford, with the old wooden boat tied on top, so we could use that for fishing out in the middle of the lake.

When we got there, we had the chicken and potato salad for dinner and we tup camp, made a campfire. My mom brought along her hammock and she had her sleeping bag in the hammock, Daddy and I slept on the ground in our sleeping bags with an air mattress to make it a little softer, and there were always a lot of mosquitoes.

The next morning, my mom would make breakfast on the campfire, coffee, hotcakes, and trout that we had caught the night before. This is still my most memorable breakfast if my life, and I really loved those camping trips.
This picture is of Roman Nose Lake, high in the hills of north Idaho mountains, one of the lakes where we went camping when I was growing up.

What a lovely story, Yvonne! ::::::::::::::::))) Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful childhood memories with us!

I can just imagine those old cars driving along the little dirt roads, Grandpa with his wooden boat, and the whole family sitting around the campfire. Those must have been such happy times! :-)

And that breakfast sounds absolutely delicious! I think it's often these simple little moments that stay with us for the rest of our lives.

Do you ever go back to any of those lakes nowadays? I imagine they must bring back so many memories!

Thank you again for sharing your story! I really enjoyed reading it! :-))))

The picture that i shared of Roman Nose Lake is one that was taken by my oldest son. When my children were growing up, we went to many of the same lakes around the north Idaho and Eastern Washington area, so they also grew up camping and fishing , although we did not have a boat, and we didn’t camp as often as my folks did when I was growing up.
My son and my grandsons still fish in that same lake, and soon he will probably be taking his grandson up there to fish.

Now, my oldest son lives on the same piece of property that my folks lived on before I was even born. They went through the Great Depression, living in an old ranch house on the property (which is now gone because it was too old and dangerous).
The old ranch house was said to have been a stagecoach stop at one time. It was a very large house for the early 1900’s, so I believe that it could have been a stagecoach stop, with lots of room for passengers to spend the night in the upstairs bedrooms.
This picture is from the early 1940’s, and you can see the house is really old even back then. It is an old photo that my mom took before I was even born, and I colored it.
