Joe, I haven't watched either one very much.
Closest I came to space series or movies was ' Lost in Space' in the 60s or 70s.

 
Except for the Star Wars movie, Solo, we have all of the Star Wars movies in DVD. I remember going into a theater in 1977 to see A New Hope, looked up at the screen and seeing this gigantic spacecraft (Vader's Star Destroyer) going overhead.

When a Star Wars Convention was at the Orlando Convention Center, we went to that for one day. What an experience that was!

I have a complete Darth Vader Halloween costume that looks like David Prowse just stepped out of. Chest Box completely lights up and has Vader's voice in it. Belt does the same (lights up). Full-size helmet and Vader boots. Also have a full-size light saber that lights up, with sound.
My wife has a female Storm Trooper costume that looks great on her, including a blaster.

We also have miniature authentic Star Wars toys, like an X-Wing and Death Star. Have numerous miniature figurines of Star Wars also.

As an avid collector of movies and TV series and DVD box sets, I have all of both of them. I suppose if I had to pick one of each and call them my favorites, it would have to be Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Star Trek: The Next Generation. But we're Star Wars fans, if anything.
 
Star Trek is science fiction, while Star Wars is science fantasy. They appeal to difference groups of people. I enjoyed the first three Star Wars flicks, but the rest sucked for me. I liked the original Star Trek, but, like @Krystal, I prefer The Next Generation better. Voyager was the worst by far for me.

I liked The Next Generation the best also. I taped all 80 episodes of the original (including the pilot) on cassette tapes, from the TV (with mic). It seems like most of the revolving cast were from the planet Velcro.....and wanted to stick around!

I see Star Wars as simplified sword & sorcery in space travel clothes. I enjoyed the 1st 3 movies, but mostly because we'd been starved of good sci-fi films for a while and these were impressive in an old-time theater with good acoustics and upgraded sound systems.


While I enjoyed TNG the first time around, a lot of it made me grit my teeth. I've seen most of it twice, but there is no going back. Little of it is good enough and most not much better than its laughable Season 1. Knock the tea from his hands, get Cap'n Somnambulant a cup of coffee!

By contrast, I find Voyager much more interesting though like any series it has some really rough patches. But despite those I've been able to re-watch most of it 3 times or more over time.

However I consider DS-9 to be "peak Trek" and in many ways the best of all. Again, some crappy episodes but also some that make vital points about both humanity and the Federation's true dark nature.

Even Enterprise is more re-watchable for me than TNG. I prefer the earlier seasons that exposed how evil the Vulcan High Command is and how unfortunate Earth was that they contacted us before, say, the Andorians. The blue guys could be hotheads, but they weren't sleazebags and we have more in common with them than Vulcans - who, as it turns out, aren't actually that different from Romulans culturally after all.

Trek is closer to actual science fiction. Dumbed down for mass audiences more than things like The Expanse, but still less of a comic book romp than Star Wars.
 
One last plug for fans of the other franchises above. This one helps understand the actual scope of space involved (our solar system) and some cultural background.

This guy pushes the books, and I'm all for reading, but I found they were almost simple rough drafts of the TV show scripts. He also goes into how The Expanse is "harder" sci-fi, almost true science fiction, as opposed to most mass media fare.

My opinions of Star Trek and TNG as you call it are simply colored by the actions of the officers. In Star Trek, the captain, first officer and often the medical officer or chief engineer all leave the ship at the same time leaving the helmsman or some other low-0ranking individual in charge of the ship and its crew in hostile environments. That never happens in real military vessels. It would be foolish to do such a thing except in home port or a very friendly and safe port somewhere.
Next generation seldom if ever had that happen. In Voyager, the captain was always putting the ship and its crew at risk for truly stupid reasons. Again, that would never happen with a competent captain. I figured it was "Woke-ism" before it became too popular. I don't know anything about a space station as I have never served on one and there are no real parallels in current military operations, although I guess Diego Garcia is pretty close.
 
Good arguments there @Don Alaska and why you might enjoy The Expanse.

Only very small ships with a handful of crew see the commander and command crew in the thick of off-ship action aside from board rooms and command centers when in home port.

The larger U.N. and M.C.R. navel ships have officers and crew performing much more realistic roles for their positions in the command hierarchy.
