The company is really getting hit in the news about this ! They had a handicapped young man working for them in the store, and he was taking some of the deli food that was being thrown out, and having that for his meals at work. Instead of talking with the employee and working things out, the store manager took pictures and documented the food thefts for several months until he had taken enough of the food to charge him with stealing it, and firing him.
That it took them months for him to eat enough food to be able to charge him with theft shows that he was not even eating very much of the food, and it was just small items, according to the news article, and they were items that were pulled from the shelf to be put into the garbage in any case.

It seem like a really petty thing for this huge grocery store chain to do, and especially with a person who is handicapped, and probably thought no one would care if he ate fruit cups that were going to be thrown out. They definitely could have handled it in a lot more productive manner than they did, and people are very upset about this.
