t has been more than 80 years since the Bismarck sank at 1039 hours on 27 May 1941. The end of her brief career foreshadowed the passing of the battleship era, of which she was a technological triumph and upon which she and her brave, fallen crew left an indelible mark.

One of my favorite songs and singers,

"The Last Farewell," performed by Roger Whittaker, is a poignant ballad about love and longing, inspired by the experiences of a soldier preparing to leave for war.

Origins

The lyrics of "The Last Farewell" were written by Ron Webster, an amateur folk singer and silversmith from Solihull, England. The inspiration struck him one rainy night while he was riding home on a bus, longing for warmth and comfort. He penned the lyrics with Roger Whittaker in mind, who was hosting a radio program at the time, inviting listeners to submit their poems and lyrics for him to set to music. Webster's submission was selected, and Whittaker composed the music for it, leading to the song's recording in 1971 for his album New World in the Morning.
