I remembered there had been a Whiskey Rebellion over taxes, but I sure didn't remember any details.

Hamilton was not a bad guy just a "Royalist". He would have preferred a regal Presidency. He started the Bank of the United States, but that was nothing like the Federal Reserve we know today. As far as I know, it principally was an attempt to manage the U.S. debt left over from the Revolution. I think Andrew Jackson abolished it when he founded the Democratic Party we know today.
