My high functioning daughter has been on assistance since 'graduating' high school. With the help of our Dept of Vocational rehab she eventually got a job at a small convention center in housekeeping. She worked there for 2 1/2 years untill the place was sold and they let all the 'special' people go. That is illegal except they said they wanted to hire their own employees instead of saying 'we don't want special people.'
Then She went out to Vermont to be near her older sister to get away from Mom. She did volunteer work and odd jobs.
Welllll she moved back to Wisconsin because there was nowhere else she could afford out east to live. Her last roommates lost their place so she has been living with me for a while again.
This shutdown has provided and interesting opportunity. Although I taught her to basically live on nothing, if she really could earn a living, that would be better, although if she found she
could not, I worry she could no longer get assistance. But I talked her into looking at one place to apply for a job, recommended by a friend.
So I told her that she should get cleaned up, not look like she just came out of a barn...Her nails are ALWAYS clean as she is OCD and that we could update her resume. Wellllll....
She called when out on a walk and told me to pick her up at this pizza place that was recommended. She had ordered a small lunch to get a feel for the place without me telling her.
As for getting cleaned up and presentable, which she was, she told me she would not have hired any of the people in there on my suggestions. They were pierced and tatooed and kind of sweaty (not from being dirty but from working, she said)
Things sure have changed from my youth on how one would have made application for employment. Problem is dealing with the internet to seek it and then doing whatever it says.

My ex's sister was in much the same position and also worked in hotel housekeeping most of her working life. In a sense she was lucky because she was never without work for any extended period of her life. It was a hard life for her after their mother passed she no longer had her mother as a backup for housing or advice. Along the way she made all sorts of horrible decisions but she did get along with family help even though her health never was really good.

This is a tough time for job seeking no matter who you are. Even the removal of illegal immigration hasn't helped enough, since it was taken as an opportunity to eliminate many jobs altogether. The COVID years altered the economy a lot.
