    I don't like forums that cannot be viewed without registering. I don't like forums that forces the guests to register even to view the forum.

    Default style

    Software or theme being used are not my primary concern for joining a forum. I join a forum for its content. I will join a forum if I am interested in the topics being discussed there.

    I have used PhpBB, MyBB, and SMF and based on my experience the only free forum that can actually compete with a premium software is none other than SMF

    I voted for Xenfofo but I think despite being free, SMF is also very good. I have a forum on running on SMF.

    Running a site with add-ons

    I don't think it is possible to run a forum or even a blog without add ons or plugins. You need them to make your website features rich.
